Kaila has been practicing and studying yoga since 1982. During that time, she explored a variety of yoga styles with some of the most prominent teachers in North America. In 1994 and 1998, she traveled through India studying as well as teaching yoga.
Flowyoga, as developed by Kaila Kukla in 1990, is a blend of traditional and modern yoga. It is rooted in the ancient system of Tantra which aims to awaken the kundalini, balance the chakras and transform physical energy into meditative energy. The ultimate aim is to unify with the source of energy that exists in all there is. Through meditation we find the stillness that reveals the truth of this oneness.
Flowyoga encourages graceful and expressive movements that reflect an awareness of the subtle sensations that arise when moving energy through the body. Transitions from posture to posture are smooth and continuous, as in a dance. Attaining extreme postures is not the aim of this yoga practice. The aim is to feel your body, centre your awareness, and relax fully into the moment.
Kaila was certified at the School of Hatha and Raja Studies by Marie Paulyn. She has also been influenced by Ken Scott who showed her the possibilities of using fluid dancelike movements to lead in and out of postures. This flow of movement originating from deep within the body has become the hallmark of her style. In India, Kaila studied with Tantra Master V. Shastri of Varanasi who initiated her into the practice of Kashmiri Shaivism, a branch of Tantra yoga.
Kaila began teaching yoga in 1986 in both Toronto and Hawaii and continues to do so at the present time. In Toronto, Kaila teaches Flowyoga in the heart of the downtown city. In Hawaii, she teaches at Laughing Stone, a glass studio that looks out onto a dense jungle of giant fern. In addition to her regular teaching schedule, Kaila travels the world introducing Flowyoga to students in Canada, United States, Mexico and India. Most recently, she taught at a little palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan India and in the temple across the road dedicated to the Lord Shiva.
Kaila also conducts teacher training programmes in the style of Flowyoga. Currently, there are graduates of the training programme teaching Flowyoga in Toronto, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver.
Kaila has produced an audio tape entitled "Flow Yoga." She has also been featured on the television series "Health Watch."
